National Cybersecurity Awareness Month Ends

If you read our last PopCykol Tip, you would have seen Hive Systems’ 2022 Brute Force Attack on Passwords table and how long it takes to crack a password. What I didn’t realize is that there was a new 2023 table. With that in mind, I’m amending my recommendation of having a 12 character password to a minimum of 14 characters using numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and symbols.

2023 Brute Force Attack on Passwords Table

Today is a great day to check your passwords and see how quickly they can be hacked and to modify those passwords that can be brute force attacked quickly. It’s better to be safe, than sorry.

BOO-rific!

Teressa showed up to hand out candy, frisbee toys, and most importantly online safety information about cyberbullying. PopCykol received lots of interest and was told our company was a great idea. Most surprisingly were some of the tweens and teens who appreciated what we were doing to keep them safe online. Here are some pics from the event.

What’s Happening Next?

STEM/STEAM Day falls on November 8. Children are significantly better off with science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics skills. That’s why STEM and STEAM education programs are so important. It’s undebatable that these subjects push society forward, and these programs help to find fun and engaging ways to teach them to students, which is all worth commemorating. So, on November 8, we celebrate STEAM/STEAM Day! PopCykol is looking forward to a new partnership with details coming soon.

National Computer Security Day

National Computer Security Day demands our attention every November 30 because cyber security affects everything from where we bank and how we spend our money to who we elect to public office. We certainly don’t want a replay of MyDoom, the worst email virus in history, which caused $38.5 billion in damage, so let’s get educated on staying safe online! PopCykol will be sharing information about keeping your computer safe. Look for more PopCykol Tips on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

We’ll also take a look at social engineering and gaming online as we approach the holiday season. Our IT Manager, Jeff, has expressed an interest in talking about Roblox and the dangers of the platform, so we’re working on a specific PopCykol Tip about Roblox and hopefully a podcast of the same.

Phoenix in December

In December, Teressa and Kemi will be traveling to Phoenix to attend the NICE (National Institute for Cybersecurity Education) K12 Cybersecurity Education Conference. It brings together K12 educators and those interested in K12 cybersecurity education for today’s youth. This annual, two-day event helps attendees learn about increasing cybersecurity career awareness, integrating cybersecurity into educational portfolios, exploring innovative educational approaches, and designing academic and career pathways that are aligned to the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework.
